(1899 – 1969)

Deineka was born in Kursk in 1899. Deineka studied painting at the Kharkov Art College (1915-1917). Deineka’s youth was filled with events surrounding the revolution in Russia.

In 1918 Deineka worked as a photographer in the Criminal Investigation Department, managed a section of the Regional Art Education Department, designed campaigns in Kursk.

From 1919-1920, Deineka served in the army. While in the army, Deineka was sent on an official trip to study poly-graphics in Moscow, which greatly inspired his future artistic pursuits.


The Defense of Petrograd


Six Nuns

In 1925 Deineka was one of the founders of Stander's Society and created a monumental, Soviet-revolutionary piece Defense of Petrograd, 1928.

In 1928 Deineka became a member of the art association "October", and in 1931 Deineka became a member of the Russian Association of Proletarian Artists. Deineka began to make political posters depicting pre-revolutionary history.

Defense of Sevastopol

During World War II Deineka created dramatic, monumental pictures. Surburb of Moscow (1941) and The Burned Village (1942) explore the suffering that he witnessed during the war. Defense of Sevastopol (1942) became a symbol of courage in his Moscow.

Occupation

Deineka not only painted, but also made mosaics in the Congressional Palace and metro stations "Mayakovakaya" (1938) and "Novokuznetskaya" (1943) in Moscow. Deineka won the Lenin Prize for his mosaic work.

Deineka lectured in many Institutes in and around Moscow. He was awarded by the Order of Lenin and the order of the Red Banner of Labor. Deineka became a Hero of Socialist Labor in the USSR.
