Susanna and the Elders 1600

Jacopo da Empoli was an important figure in Florence painting reform, a movement that followed mannerism in Italy. Da Empoli was born in Florence at the parish of San Lorenzo. He was the son of Chimenti and the grandson of a flax-dresser, Girolamo. His family originally came from the town of Empoli, from which their surname is derived.

It is believed that Jacopo exclusively trained in Florence, as there is no documentation leading experts to believe that he travelled outside of the Tuscany region. While Maso da San Friano formally taught Jacopo, most of his training was achieved by copying master paintings. Jacopo looked at artists such as Pontormo, Bartolomeo and Bronzino and is most known for his involvement in the Mannerist reform of Santi di Tito.

Still Life

As Jacopo’s career progressed, his reputation grew, and he received important commissions from the cardinal, Carlo de’ Medici. Many of his commissioned pieces are still housed in museums and official buildings in Florence. Jacopo da Empoli was praised both for his larger genre paintings as well as his smaller still life paintings.

Jacopo occasionally collaborated with Alessandro Tiarini and trained younger students Virgilio Zaballi and Felice Ficherell. Jacopo died in Florence where he was buried at the Basilica di San Lorenzo. His paintings are now in Europe’s finest museums, including the Louvre in Paris, the Uffizi in Florence, and the Kunsthistorisches in Vienna.  Jacopo da Empoli is certainly an important figure in Italian art history.
