Georg Melchior Kraus was an 18th century German painter. He is often cited as one of the most popular German painters of the 18th century by art historians and scholars. Kraus mainly painted portraits, and was often affiliated with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Goethe
Kraus was a fairly prolific artist and created illustrations for children's books in addition to his portraits, and died at the hands of French soldiers after his home was attacked during the Napoleonic wars.
