Alfred Henry Maurer was an American modernist painter born in New York City. Maurer left school at the age of sixteen to work as a lithographer for his father. Growing up in New York City, Maurer had the opportunity to meet a variety of artists and craftsmen. In addition to working as a printer, Maurer was exposed to sculpture by John Quincy Adams Ward and painting by William Merritt Chase.

Maurer moved to Paris for four years to paint and immerse himself in the European art world. Maurer established an international reputation as an artist and won several awards in New York, Belgium and Munich. As Maurer matured as an artist he began to deviate in style from other artists. Maurer stopped making realist paintings and primarily painted in a cubist or fauvist manner. Though seen as avant-garde, Maurer exhibited at the 291 Gallery and in the 1913 Armory Show in New York City.
